This festive season, for the first time, Westcountry Rivers Trust (WRT) is taking part in The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2021 to help everyone revel in their Westcountry rivers.

As a charity, WRT needs to seek financial support. Its Revel in Your Westcountry Rivers festive fundraiser aims to raise £12,500 to support their citizen science and education projects by engaging a diversity of people in river-related opportunities. This informs their work through robust river monitoring while also enlightening more people about how intrinsic our rivers and waterways are to our everyday lives.

The Challenge goes live online from 12pm on 30 November (#GivingTuesday) to 12pm on 7 December, and public donations can be doubled through a pledged match pot of £6,250.

Save the date to donate if you can and/or share details of this with your family, friends, and networks.

WRT is a partner in Connecting the Culm and its Westcountry Citizen Science Investigations (CSI) team helps interested volunteers monitor the River Culm. But it’s not just about gathering data as being immersed in nature has wellbeing benefits too.

Westcountry CSI volunteer Kate said: “Taking part has given me the opportunity to observe a local patch through the different seasons, and to understand the critical role our watercourses play in connectivity for nature; being part of a group of people who are eager to make a difference fights my eco-anxiety too.”

And despite the restrictions in 2020, WRT still managed to engage with 100 schoolchildren to inspire a love of life in, on and near our freshwater environments, with them keen to do even more across the region.

Following a river clean with Duchy College Sport and Physical Activity (Outdoor) students this year, their lecturer told WRT that it helped them to “understand further the challenges of leading activities in the natural environment, the consequences of our impact on these fragile sites, and how we can sustainably conserve through education these spaces for future generations to enjoy”.
